Prepare your child for child custody before your divorce

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2016 | Child Custody |

Divorce will bring on more challenges for you and your family. You and your spouse may have a lot of struggles ahead, but you may not fully realize the effect your separation can have on your children.

Children need time to adjust to their new environment. It may be difficult for your child to accept their new living arrangements. It may be a challenge for a child to accept that his or her parents are no longer married. If you’re a parent that has recently divorced, you may want to think of ways you can help your child adjust to their new way of living. Before the divorce is announced, you may want to consider discussing with your child that you and your spouse have agreed to live separate lives from each other. Make a conscious effort not to discuss your spouse with your child. You do not want your child to be confused about his or her parents.

You may want to be well versed and prepared for questions from your child regarding why his or her parents are splitting up. Your child may want to know where they will be living most of the time. He or she may ask where they will be attending school. They may also ask you how much time they will spend with you and your ex-spouse.

You may want to consider creating your custody plan and discussing your custody plan with your child. In Indiana, child custody attorneys may help you form a custody plan that is in the best interests of your child. You may want to mentally prepare your child for what he or she can expect when spending time with you. This will help your child adapt to their new living situation.
